Definition of Class

The Desoto campus of the University of Mississippi in Southaven, Mississippi is seeking a Distance Learning Technician II. The responsibilities of this role include troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing audio-visual and distance learning equipment, monitoring distance learning systems to ensure compliance with design standards, facilitating learning classes and video-conference meetings for faculty and staff, and offering user support to meet the computing and audio-visual needs of faculty, staff, and students.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs distance learning and related equipment.
  • Oversees the operation of classroom video equipment and ensures connectivity to remote sites.
  • Directs the technical operation of video conferencing systems.
  • Monitors distance learning systems and makes adjustments as necessary to optimize performance.
  • Diagnoses and reports hardware problems and failures in distance learning classrooms.
  • Maintains distance learning equipment and software inventory, and recommends upgrades/replacements.
  • Facilitates system and equipment upgrades, serving as a vendor point of contact.
  • Provides user support to meet faculty, staff, and student computing and audio/visual needs.
  • Trains staff and student workers on the proper use and maintenance of distance learning equipment and software.
  • Maintains computing and audio-visual requests, and delegates related tasks to support staff.
  • Oversees staff and the work of student support in a distance learning and/or a computer lab environment.
  • Sets up and maintains instructional technology in enhanced presentation rooms.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required.

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

  1. Maintains, repairs and coordinates upgrades of distance learning and audio-visual equipment and software.
  2. Monitors distance learning systems to ensure design standards are met.
  3. Assists faculty and staff by facilitating distance learning classes and videoconference meetings.
  4. Coordinates classroom facilities, operational tasks and staff involved with distance learning services.

Minimum Education/Experience

Education:
Associate’s Degree from an accredited two-year college or university.

AND

Experience:
Two (2) years of experience related to the above described duties.

Substitution Statement: Related experience may be substituted for education, on a basis set forth and approved by the Department of Human Resources.
